New Foundation Plans Free SANS Training for U.S. and Canadian Utilities

Accenture, Dragos and SANS Institute have launched the Community Cyber Resilience Foundation, with plans to provide free cybersecurity support and training to smaller utilities. The foundation’s current website lists eligible operators in the United States and Canada.

The October 20 announcement describes an initial commitment of approximately US$10 million in funding and services, supporting up to 500 utilities in the first phase. The program combines operational technology security tools, deployment assistance, hardware support and staff training.

What the Training Includes

The foundation’s program page lists SANS OnDemand training spanning cybersecurity foundations through industrial control systems and operational technology, alongside GIAC certification. Specific course assignments and certification arrangements should be confirmed with the program.

The training sits within a broader support package. According to the launch announcement, participating utilities can expect Dragos technology for asset visibility and threat monitoring, Accenture deployment services, and funding for equipment needed to run the platform.

The aim is to build capabilities that utility teams can maintain after deployment. Peer support and access to the Dragos community are also included.

Who This Is For

The foundation’s website identifies water, wastewater, electric and natural gas utilities with annual revenue below US$100 million, or C$140 million, as its target participants. Enrollment operates through qualifying utility organizations.

For cybersecurity professionals working with these operators, the training may particularly interest:

  • SOC analysts developing monitoring and investigation skills for industrial environments.
  • Security engineers responsible for implementing and maintaining protective infrastructure.

Those role connections are editorial suggestions. Eligibility depends on the utility and the foundation’s review.

Enrollment Has Yet to Open

As of October 22, the foundation’s website says enrollment will open soon and offers an interest list for updates. Joining that list does not confirm acceptance or an immediate training place.

Utility staff can review the eligibility criteria and register interest through the foundation’s website. Before planning training, confirm the enrollment timetable, available places and support package directly with the program.
